Nornorna · Operationally driven fixed-wing aircraft · Autonomous systems

The sky sees everything.

Flying shouldn’t give you away.

Nornorna designs and builds operationally driven fixed-wing aircraft and the autonomous systems that operate them. We build on operational needs, not engineering wants. Conventional drones make the operator broadcast continuous RF, run a noisy platform and draw fire onto their own position. Ours are built so that trade-off never has to be made.

Nornorna designs and builds operationally driven fixed-wing aircraft and the autonomous systems that operate them: an autonomy that is predictable, trained on the same basis as SOF operatives.

Launch from concealment, with a minimal footprint.

Execute without satellite fixes, on a ground link whose interface is built for radio discipline.

Report only when the situation changes or a detection is made, in the reporting format your units already use.

01 The company

End-users set the need. Not engineers.

Nornorna was founded by long-service special operations veterans and aerospace industrial leaders on one principle: we build on operational needs, not engineering wants. The people who have to use a system under fire decide what it must do, and engineering answers to that.

Most defense systems are built by engineers who have never had to use them under incoming fire.
01

Operational grounding Multi-decade special operations, military and reconnaissance backgrounds. Every requirement was written by someone who has carried the weight in the field.

02

Industrial scale Manufacturing, supply chain and electronics production leadership, focused on yield, QA and capacity, so a field need becomes a fielded product.

03

Independent, with partners Founder-owned, with government, development and production partners globally. We publish no more about the people and the places than that, and the reasons will be obvious.

02 Technology

Why we design the way we do.

Every choice in the stack traces back to an operational need and to one demand from the people who operate it: know what the aircraft will do next. The principles below are the design; the architecture is what they produce.

  • Operational need first. A feature enters the design because someone has needed it under fire, not because it was possible. We build on operational needs, not engineering wants.
  • Predictable before clever. The autonomy chooses from a closed, fixed set of actions, evaluated against doctrine at a fixed rate. A learned model may propose; a deterministic governor disposes.
  • Trained on the same basis as SOF operatives. The doctrine the governor enforces is the one small teams already operate by: get in unseen, act only when needed, and report only what is verified.
  • Silence is a requirement, not a mode. The aircraft assumes the spectrum is watched and the sky is too. It emits a report, and only when there is one to send.
  • Assume the link and the fix are gone. Perception, navigation and decision all run onboard. A satellite fix and a datalink are conveniences the design never depends on.
  • Everything on the record. Every decision, and every decision refused, is logged and replayable. Trust is earned from evidence, never from a claim.
  • The autonomy never touches the stick. Stabilisation and stall margin stay in the flight controller behind an authority boundary the learned model cannot cross.
  • Cheap enough to lose. Attritable by design, so expending an aircraft is a tactical decision and never a financial one.

The architecture

Deterministic autonomy. Zero black-box decisions.

In Norse myth the Norns weave fate — past, present and future. The architecture splits compute along exactly those boundaries, so a learned model can never bypass vehicle safety.

Verdandi

Perception · the present

A streaming, promptable detector running on commodity edge silicon, with deterministic inference under 100 ms. Target profiles can be retasked mid-sortie without retraining.

Behaviour · the future

A hybrid decision governor at 48 Hz. It evaluates telemetry and target confidence against a closed, fixed set of operational actions, and gates every commit.

Norns

The authority boundary

Orchestrates the companion services and gates every command. It translates a behaviour intent into a high-level autopilot command only when navigation freshness, link state and engagement permissions all clear their safety checks.

Only what clears the gate

Autopilot

Actuation

Stabilisation, airspeed and stall margin stay in the flight controller. The autonomy never reaches inside that loop.

Urd

Evidence · the past

Append-only mission truth. Every sensor input, score, safety evaluation and blocked command candidate is recorded — to prove why the system acted, or why it held.

Immutable audit engine

The design problem it answers

The tactical reality nobody puts in a brochure.

Every capability a conventional drone gives you, it takes back as signature. Our aircraft are designed so that they do not, whatever the end-user flies them for.

Operational failure The conventional drone risk The Nornorna architecture
RF signature Continuous video downlinks turn the operator into an electronic-warfare beacon. Radio discipline, enforced by the autonomy. Perception and decision run entirely onboard. The aircraft emits a verified report, and only when there is one to send.
Cognitive burden Hands on sticks and eyes on screens leave operators vulnerable. Task, don’t pilot. Bounded flight intents run against onboard doctrine while the operator holds perimeter security.
Return signature A rotary craft buzzing back to the trench marks the team’s exact defensive coordinates. Attritable or offset recovery. One-way search and report, or an offset landing that keeps the position masked.
Contested nav Electronic warfare and spoofing trigger predictable return-to-launch climbs, or flyaways. Visual land-nav and dead reckoning. Operates natively in GNSS-denied corridors with no sat-fix dependency.
Visual & acoustic signature FPVs are easy to detect: a distinctive shape and a distinctive sound that a sentry learns to recognise in days. A low sound and visual print. A quiet fixed wing with a small, unfamiliar silhouette, hard to hear before it is overhead and hard to pick out when it is.
The aircraft is the only thing in the air, and it stays quiet until there is something worth reporting. Nothing on the ground answers it. Nothing is waiting for it to come home.

03 Products

Two airframes. One autonomy.

SURTR is fielded and Hofund can act on it. Both fly on the Norns system, and the Norns system also fits aircraft you already operate. Each is described by what it is and what it can do. What it is used for is below, and the end-user’s call.

Use cases

Built on operational needs. Employed by the end-user.

We build on operational needs, not engineering wants. How the aircraft are employed is decided by the end-user, under their own doctrine, law and rules of engagement. These are the roles the family is suited to, and what each product brings to them.

04 Shadow-first verification

How we de-risk autonomy for primes and end-users.

Authority is earned in stages, and every stage is evidenced. Nothing is granted live command until it has been shown, on recorded runs, what it would have done.

Phase 01

SITL simulation

Full system validation in synthetic environments.

Phase 02

Observe mode

Live onboard compute running passively, emitting nothing to the autopilot.

Phase 03

Forced shadow

Every command candidate logged and counterfactually verified against what the crew actually did.

Phase 04

Limited live authority

Gated high-level intent emitted under human doctrine.

Every stage is flown before it is trusted, and every run is on the record.
  • Doctrine before output. Learned outputs are strictly subordinate to deterministic state-machine rules.
  • Immutable black box. Replay a sortie frame by frame in a post-mission debrief or a procurement audit.
  • Release gating. Hard build blockers stop a model reaching the field unless the quantised weights match the reference within a fixed tolerance.
  • Refusals are evidence too. A blocked command is recorded with its reason, so the safety case is built from what the system declined as much as from what it did.
