Norns System

Task, don’t pilot.

Norns is the bounded onboard intelligence that operates SURTR and Hofund, packaged for airframes the customer already operates. If it speaks MAVLink it can carry Norns, without becoming a different aircraft and without a hardware vendor lock-in.

01 What it adds

The same discipline, on your airframe.

Norns does not replace the autopilot. It sits above it, behind an authority boundary, and brings four things to an aircraft that did not have them.

  • Radio discipline Perception and decision run onboard. The aircraft emits a verified report, and only when there is one to send. No continuous video downlink, no beacon.
  • Task, don’t pilot Bounded flight intents run against onboard doctrine while the operator holds perimeter security. Hands off sticks, eyes off screens.
  • Contested navigation Visual land-nav and dead reckoning, natively, in GNSS-denied corridors. No return-to-launch climb on the first spoofed fix.
  • An audit you can replay Every sensor input, score, safety evaluation and blocked command is on the record, frame by frame, for the debrief or the procurement audit.

02 Architecture

Deterministic autonomy. Zero black-box decisions.

In Norse myth the Norns weave fate — past, present and future. The architecture splits compute along exactly those boundaries, so a learned model can never bypass vehicle safety.

Verdandi

Perception · the present

A streaming, promptable detector running on commodity edge silicon, with deterministic inference under 100 ms. Target profiles can be retasked mid-sortie without retraining.

Edge perception & tracking

Skuld

Behaviour · the future

A hybrid decision governor at 48 Hz. It evaluates telemetry and target confidence against a closed, fixed set of operational actions, and gates every commit.

Intents descend

Norns

The authority boundary

Orchestrates the companion services and gates every command. It translates a behaviour intent into a high-level autopilot command only when navigation freshness, link state and engagement permissions all clear their safety checks.

Only what clears the gate

Autopilot

Actuation

Stabilisation, airspeed and stall margin stay in the flight controller. The autonomy never reaches inside that loop.

Stabilisation & safety limits

Urd

Evidence · the past

Append-only mission truth. Every sensor input, score, safety evaluation and blocked command candidate is recorded — to prove why the system acted, or why it held.

03 Multi-node scalability

Alpha coordinates. Every aircraft remains sovereign.

Modern swarms break when communication degrades. Wolfpack replaces fragile centralised control with distributed tactical coordination.

  • Sovereign rejection. The coordinating Alpha proposes search roles and sector handoffs, but each aircraft validates its own battery, position trust and safety rules. Any node can decline a task, and report why.
  • Bandwidth realism. No raw video is exchanged. Members share only compact, typed state — tracklets, target rankings, health — small enough to survive aggressive jamming.
  • Graceful degradation. If the Alpha is intercepted or jammed, the pack re-settles dynamically rather than collapsing with it.
  • Stated plainly. Wolfpack is in development and proven in simulation. We are not claiming it as fielded capability, and we will say so plainly when it is.
One pack, one picture. Three aircraft on one mesh, reporting into a single queue. Duplicate sightings of the same object are reconciled to one entry before a human ever sees them — and every entry waits for that human. Nothing is decided in the air.

04 Integration

How it goes onto a fleet.

Norns is fitted, not installed and trusted. Authority is earned in the same four stages SURTR went through, on your aircraft and your recorded runs.

  • MAVLink in, MAVLink out. Norns talks to the flight controller as a high-level intent source. Stabilisation, airspeed and stall margin stay where they are, in the autopilot; the autonomy never reaches inside that loop.
  • Commodity edge compute. Industrial-grade, export-compliant silicon, so the companion computer is a line item rather than a programme.
  • Shadow first. Observe mode, then forced shadow, then limited live authority under human doctrine — every stage evidenced before the next is granted. See how we de-risk autonomy.
  • Retaskable in the field. Target profiles are changed mid-sortie without retraining, so the fleet does not wait on a model release to change its mission.
